Without a doubt, the Historic Center is one of the most important areas of Mexico City — not only for the vast historical, cultural, and architectural heritage one finds along its streets, but also as one of the most economically active places in the city, full of shops, restaurants, bars, government and private offices, and countless artistic and cultural spaces. Year after year, the Historic Center, located in the Cuauhtémoc borough, remains the city's most important site, just as Tenochtitlan — the capital of the Aztec empire — was on this same ground. That is why in recent years the city government has invested billions of pesos in rehabilitating and recovering the Historic Center and its surrounding neighborhoods, renewing public spaces and incentivizing private investment in the area.
Over the next few years alone, under the “2020–2024 Recovery Plan,” the CDMX government will invest more than 13 billion pesos to continue rehabilitation works in the city center. These actions include: interventions on protected buildings that form part of the city's architectural heritage; restoration of façades; new bike-lane routes such as the trolley-bike route and the extension of the cycle path to the Historic Center. The plan also seeks to reconfigure urban planning, creating opportunities for economic development and increasing cultural activity to drive tourism — one of the city's most important industries.
The government has also invested in strengthening security in the city center and surroundings, installing better-tech cameras and adding new patrol vehicles to safeguard the area.
These actions ensure that in the coming years the Historic Center and surrounding neighborhoods will not only see their property values rise, but will also offer residents greater security. Mexico City will renew itself and foster the interconnection of its neighborhoods, the sustainability of its districts, and the strengthening of its communities — meeting the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
